Written amid the devastation of the Second World War, Simone Weil’s The Need for Roots begins with a startling reversal: rights are not the foundation of justice. Obligation comes first. A right becomes real only when another person accepts a duty toward the one who possesses it; obligation remains binding even when every institution ignores it.

Weil finds this condition in the factory worker reduced to “human material,” the peasant taught to despise the land, the citizen absorbed into the machinery of the state, and the reader abandoned to propaganda and organized falsehood.

Her remedies remain as provocative as her diagnosis. She calls for the transformation of industrial work, the abolition of political parties, the restoration of professional honor, and a new patriotism founded not on national glory but on compassion for a fragile homeland.

Neither conventionally conservative nor socialist, liberal nor authoritarian, The Need for Roots escapes every familiar political category. It asks a question that modern societies still struggle to hear:
