Great crimes. Great ambitions. Great falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robert Walser has another idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <em>Prose Pieces<\/em>, a sausage can become a philosophical catastrophe. A bachelor can resist the social expectation that he must be rescued from bachelorhood. A writer can decline a grand journey because he prefers his room, his tea, his cigarette, and his cat. A forgotten animal can become more morally significant than an entire social hierarchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser\u2019s genius lies in treating the apparently negligible as if it deserved the full pressure of thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is comic, tender, unstable, and often surprisingly radical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are seven of the most striking ideas running through the collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Small things become profound when we pay ridiculous attention to them<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Sausage\u201d may be the purest example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The narrator has eaten a sausage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he immediately begins mourning the irreversible fact that what once existed now no longer exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat only just now was there is gone, and no one will ever bring it back to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The joke keeps escalating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He regrets his appetite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He regrets his impatience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He regrets the fact that the sausage might still be present had he not eaten it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He even realizes that repentance itself only enlarges the loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What begins as gluttony turns into metaphysics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brilliance lies in the disproportion. Walser applies the language of tragedy to lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the joke does not entirely cancel the thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything consumed is irrecoverable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every action closes another possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every pleasure contains disappearance because enjoying something often means using it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sausage is absurd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser\u2019s method is to let comedy carry an idea farther than solemn philosophy might dare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Success may deform us more than failure does<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In \u201cSon and Mother,\u201d a poor mother sacrifices herself so that her son can be educated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He succeeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he rises socially, he becomes increasingly inflated by his own importance until he can no longer fit, morally or imaginatively, into the small world from which he came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser turns the metaphor physical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The successful son has become too broad, too swollen, too grand to pass through the narrow doorway of his mother\u2019s poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The image is comic and brutal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Success, in Walser, is never automatically admirable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ambition, status, education, and advancement may enlarge a person socially while shrinking him humanly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, \u201cThe Brothers\u201d remembers youth, poverty, artistic aspiration, cheap lodgings, country walks, and simple meals almost as a form of lost abundance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow beautiful it is to be poor and young and unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser does not simply romanticize deprivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His deeper suspicion is directed at prestige.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The young want fame because they imagine fame will enlarge life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The famous may discover that what fame has enlarged is merely their public outline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Social labels often tell us less about people than about our need to classify them<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser repeatedly takes ordinary categories and destabilizes them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider \u201cThe Nimble Man and the Lazy Man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nimble man proves, somehow, less nimble than the lazy one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lazy man proves, somehow, more nimble than the nimble one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The distinctions collapse through sheer repetition until language appears to have trapped itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story is silly by design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the silliness reveals something important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Words such as <em>lazy<\/em>, <em>energetic<\/em>, <em>successful<\/em>, <em>respectable<\/em>, <em>cultivated<\/em>, or <em>failed<\/em> often begin as descriptions and end as judgments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser keeps asking what happens when the person underneath the label refuses to cooperate with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same thing happens elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The murderess does not look like a murderess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bachelor does not necessarily suffer from being unmarried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unsuccessful writer may be perfectly content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The supposedly energetic man may simply be restless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser\u2019s characters keep escaping the nouns assigned to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His comedy becomes a quiet critique of the human appetite for classification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Refusing ambition can sometimes be a form of freedom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In \u201cKoffermann and Zimmermann,\u201d one writer is sent to Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another publisher, apparently unable to tolerate being outdone, decides that his own writer must therefore go to Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zimmermann refuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He likes his room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He likes his stillness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He likes his tea, cigarette, cat, and old travelling basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He even reports that he has already visited Turkey in his thoughts and found it boring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is difficult to imagine a more Walserian rebellion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world says: movement is opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zimmermann says: perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world says: important writers should travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zimmermann prefers not to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His refusal is comic because it violates the modern assumption that activity is inherently virtuous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are accustomed to admiring expansion: more experience, more travel, more achievement, more visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser keeps wondering whether a life might become richer by becoming smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zimmermann does not heroically reject civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He simply declines to be hurried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in Walser, that modest refusal can look almost revolutionary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. Irony does not destroy feeling; it protects feeling from becoming pompous<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser rarely allows sentiment to stand unguarded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever emotion grows too noble, irony arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the irony usually does not annihilate the emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It shelters it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Brothers\u201d repeatedly describes youthful artistic enthusiasm as beautiful and ridiculous at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The young men are foolish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their dreams are exaggerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their memories are sentimental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet the tenderness survives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same movement appears throughout the collection: a feeling becomes exposed, the narrator jokes about it, but something remains after the joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of Walser\u2019s most distinctive emotional techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He seems to distrust any feeling that announces its own seriousness too loudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So he embarrasses it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He makes it stumble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He calls it foolish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And once sentiment has lost its dignity, it becomes believable again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser\u2019s irony is therefore not cruelty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is camouflage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feeling is allowed to survive because it is never forced to appear heroic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>6. Foolishness may be more humane than seriousness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Masquerade Ball\u201d presents several different fools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pierrot is consumed by sorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pantalone is consumed by vanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hanswurst, or Harlequin, is consumed by joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, Hanswurst seems the least serious of them all. He dances, jokes, leaps, teases, and refuses heaviness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet he becomes the most generous figure in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis happiness made all the others happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentence contains a surprisingly strong ethical idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hanswurst\u2019s pleasure is not private.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It circulates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His lightness does not make him indifferent to others. On the contrary, his joy creates joy around him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The solemn characters are trapped inside themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fool escapes himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser quietly overturns the usual hierarchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gravity is not automatically moral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seriousness is not automatically profound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A ridiculous person may be kinder than a respectable one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A foolish person may understand life better than the person who has built an identity around being important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser\u2019s fool is not wise because foolishness secretly disguises wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is wise because he remains foolish without becoming cruel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>7. Attention may be one of the highest forms of morality<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again and again, Walser gravitates toward people and creatures the world barely notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The awkward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The humiliated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The abandoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unsuccessful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The socially inconvenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In \u201cPupil and Teacher,\u201d a boy who has become the object of his teacher\u2019s hostility performs a striking reversal: unable to seek protection elsewhere, he asks protection from the very man who persecutes him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In \u201cThe Forsaken Woman,\u201d the narrator moves through poverty, darkness, decay, and despair before discovering warmth and tenderness in the least promising place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And elsewhere in the collection, Walser\u2019s gaze falls upon animals whose needs cannot be easily translated into social usefulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What matters is not that these marginal beings are secretly extraordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That would still leave the old hierarchy intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser refuses that rescue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The neglected matter because they are there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The small matter because they are alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unnoticed deserve attention without first proving that they deserve greatness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may be the collection\u2019s most radical proposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Literature does not have to elevate the insignificant into importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can question the demand for importance itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why Walser\u2019s prose feels so strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continually chooses what conventional storytelling would discard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A digression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hesitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An embarrassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A socially unsuccessful person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A silly joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A badly behaved sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A trivial appetite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An old basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A small animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he looks again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in that second look, the scale changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grand becomes suspicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The negligible becomes inexhaustible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walser does not ask us to believe that everyone is secretly exceptional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He asks something more unsettling:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>why should exceptionality be the price of our attention?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His prose keeps wandering toward those who fail to impress the world, fail to advance, fail to belong, fail to become exemplary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And instead of correcting them, improving them, or turning them into heroes, Walser simply stays nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may be his deepest form of generosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
