7 Counterintuitive Lessons from Eug\u00e8ne Marsan\u2019s In Praise of Laziness<\/em><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

We are usually taught to treat laziness as a defect requiring correction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work harder. Move faster. Make better use of the day. Turn free time into improvement, improvement into productivity, and productivity into proof that the day was not wasted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eug\u00e8ne Marsan\u2019s In Praise of Laziness<\/em> begins by making fun of this moral reflex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But his argument is more subtle than the title suggests. Marsan does not simply praise doing nothing. He distinguishes sterile inertia from a richer condition of leisure: the unoccupied time in which thought gathers, ambition loosens its grip, imagination becomes receptive, and a person temporarily escapes the machinery of necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His deepest question is therefore not whether we should work less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is whether we still know what free time is for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are seven of the book\u2019s most provocative ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

1. Laziness and idleness are not the same thing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most important distinction in the book eventually becomes linguistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latin offers two words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is pigritia<\/em>: sluggishness, torpor, sterile inactivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there is otium<\/em>: leisure, repose, withdrawal from compulsory business\u2014the time of reading, contemplation, conversation, study, and thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan\u2019s defense concerns the second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ajax, one of the ch\u00e2teau\u2019s playful defenders of laziness, insists:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cLaziness\u2014in other words, leisure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The distinction changes the entire argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person doing nothing may simply be inert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But another person who appears equally inactive may be reading inwardly, remembering, imagining, composing, or allowing thought to mature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the outside, the two conditions may look identical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Internally, they are opposites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan\u2019s real enemy is therefore not work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is our inability to recognize forms of activity that produce no immediate visible result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

2. Some of our best ideas arrive when usefulness has temporarily been suspended<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan repeatedly associates discovery with moments of apparent idleness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Archimedes is in his bath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newton is walking or dreaming beneath the apple tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The poet sits motionless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing, visibly, is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet inwardly something may already be forming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan describes the apparently idle poet beautifully:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cIn that head which you believe indolent, he is caressing the forms and numbers of beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This is one of the essay\u2019s strongest intuitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creative work does not begin at the instant the pen touches paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thought often requires incubation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memories must combine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Images must wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhythms must become audible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solutions sometimes appear only after attention has stopped forcing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan\u2019s examples are playful rather than scientific demonstrations, but the larger claim is clear: receptivity cannot always be scheduled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A culture obsessed with visible output may therefore systematically underestimate one of the conditions from which output emerges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

3. Laziness may protect us from our worst ambitions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan\u2019s strangest moral argument is that vice can be exhausting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ambition requires effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Envy requires endless comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intrigue requires calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hypocrisy demands constant maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hatred consumes attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cultivated lazy person, by contrast, may simply lack the energy\u2014or appetite\u2014for these violent passions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan calls laziness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cthe wise man\u2019s shield.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The phrase is comic, but the idea underneath it is serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person who does not desperately need advancement may be less tempted to destroy a rival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person content with his condition may be less vulnerable to envy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person who dislikes agitation may prefer reconciliation to conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan therefore associates laziness with moderation, constancy, fidelity, and peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The argument is deliberately exaggerated. Laziness obviously does not guarantee virtue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Marsan makes a sharper point: qualities we usually praise\u2014energy, ambition, tirelessness\u2014are not morally innocent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A villain can be extraordinarily hardworking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Restlessness can become destructive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the refusal to join the race is itself a form of self-command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

4. Civilization may secretly be a gigantic project for abolishing work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan eventually produces one of the book\u2019s most entertaining reversals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if the history of invention is really the history of human beings trying to save themselves effort?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The club extends the arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wheel reduces exertion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Animals carry burdens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writing relieves memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Printing spares the copyist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Machines take over repetitive tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viewed from this angle, technological civilization becomes a spectacular contradiction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

human beings work enormously hard to invent ways of working less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan therefore overturns the conventional story of progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology is usually praised because it allows us to produce more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He asks a different question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If machinery saves labor, why must the reward for saved labor always be more labor<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the book\u2019s formulation, work is not the harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The harbor is leisure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That question feels unexpectedly contemporary because societies can become more technologically efficient while remaining unable to imagine what liberated time should be used for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Productivity increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expectation of availability increases with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan asks whether this may represent a failure to understand the purpose of efficiency itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

5. The opposite of leisure is not activity\u2014it is necessity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan\u2019s reflections eventually move toward Scripture and the idea of the Fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His point is not that Adam did absolutely nothing before expulsion from Eden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adam acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cultivates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But activity before the Fall is imagined as fundamentally different from labor under compulsion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afterward come necessity, hardship, thorns, and sweat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This allows Marsan to make an important distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is not action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is activity experienced solely as something one must<\/strong> do in order to survive, advance, compete, or satisfy external demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A gardener working freely and a laborer working under necessity may perform similar movements while inhabiting entirely different worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, a poet may work intensely while experiencing that labor as freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure therefore does not necessarily mean stillness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can include demanding activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What matters is whether a person\u2019s time belongs, at least partly, to the person using it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deeper ideal in Marsan is sovereignty over one\u2019s own attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

6. A defense of leisure inevitably becomes a political problem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once Marsan establishes that leisure matters to thought, invention, self-knowledge, and culture, an uncomfortable question appears:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

who gets to have it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historically, cultivated leisure has often depended upon other people performing necessary labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan recognizes this problem, but the book\u2019s own social imagination remains historically marked. It looks nostalgically toward older social arrangements, distrusts some egalitarian solutions, and sometimes accepts hierarchy more readily than a contemporary reader may wish to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This produces one of the book\u2019s most productive contradictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If leisure is merely a luxury, unequal access to it may seem regrettable but secondary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if leisure is one of the conditions of education, invention, contemplation, artistic creation, and self-understanding, then its distribution becomes much more serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan\u2019s own premises begin to outrun his politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One can draw from them a conclusion more egalitarian than the book itself consistently does:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a society that monopolizes meaningful leisure also monopolizes some of the conditions under which human capacities develop.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That tension makes the essay more interesting, not less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its praise of leisure ultimately forces a question about who is allowed to possess time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

7. Free time can nourish a life\u2014or become the place where a life disappears<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan does not allow his praise of laziness to end comfortably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fair Laggard initially seems to embody the whole philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She appears to drift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But her apparent idleness may be a period of inward formation rather than emptiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, she works, teaches, and takes responsibility for her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her earlier leisure has not destroyed her ability to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan suggests that it may have reflected a \u201csuperabundance of spiritual forces\u201d\u2014too many possibilities rather than too few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then comes the darker counterexample: Rivarol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brilliant, dazzling, overflowing with unwritten masterpieces, he always seems to need only one more hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hour never arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Potential remains potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The imagined work remains superior to every real work because it never has to survive the humiliation of being written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here Marsan turns against the easiest interpretation of his own title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure may make creation possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it can also become a way of postponing creation forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The distinction between fruitful leisure and waste therefore depends upon what time eventually becomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan\u2019s final warning is simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cFriend, take care of the hours. Each one is unique.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

That sentence transforms the entire book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

In Praise of Laziness<\/em> turns out not to be a manifesto for doing nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a defense of unclaimed time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time in which attention is not immediately rented out to usefulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time in which imagination can wander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time in which ambition cools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time in which a person can read, think, observe, hesitate, invent, or simply discover what he actually wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Marsan refuses the comforting conclusion that such time is automatically virtuous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure can produce Archimedes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can produce poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can produce serenity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can also produce nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is what gives the book its final seriousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenge is not merely to protect empty hours from work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is to learn how to inhabit them without immediately filling them\u2014and without allowing them to vanish unused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marsan\u2019s question, nearly a century later, has only become more difficult:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do we want more free time because we know what freedom is for\u2014or merely because we want a longer interval before work begins again?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
