Why do prosperous societies produce loneliness, resentment, and political fanaticism? Why can formal freedom coexist with a profound sense of powerlessness? And what does a human being require beyond food, security, and legal rights?<\/p>\n

Written amid the devastation of the Second World War, Simone Weil\u2019s The Need for Roots<\/em> begins with a startling reversal: rights are not the foundation of justice. Obligation comes first. A right becomes real only when another person accepts a duty toward the one who possesses it; obligation remains binding even when every institution ignores it.<\/p>\n

From this radical premise, Weil constructs one of the twentieth century\u2019s most original accounts of human need. The soul, she argues, requires nourishment as urgently as the body. It needs freedom and obedience, equality and hierarchy, security and risk, private attachment and collective belonging. Above all, it needs truth, meaningful work, and participation in a living community.<\/p>\n

When these needs are denied, people become uprooted\u2014separated from their labor, their history, their surroundings, and any intelligible future. Weil finds this condition in the factory worker reduced to \u201chuman material,\u201d the peasant taught to despise the land, the citizen absorbed into the machinery of the state, and the reader abandoned to propaganda and organized falsehood.<\/p>\n

Her remedies remain as provocative as her diagnosis. She calls for the transformation of industrial work, the abolition of political parties, the restoration of professional honor, and a new patriotism founded not on national glory but on compassion for a fragile homeland.<\/p>\n

Neither conventionally conservative nor socialist, liberal nor authoritarian, The Need for Roots<\/em> escapes every familiar political category. It asks a question that modern societies still struggle to hear:<\/p>\n
