More than two thousand years ago, Ovid asked that question with astonishing audacity.<\/p>\n
In The Art of Love<\/em>, he treats desire as a craft. Love can be studied, practiced, staged, intensified, sustained. Men and women learn how to attract, persuade, conceal, provoke, wait, withdraw, return. The city itself becomes a laboratory of desire: theaters, banquets, streets, temples, letters, clothing, memory, jealousy, absence\u2014all become instruments in love\u2019s elaborate machinery.<\/p>\n Then Ovid performs his most brilliant reversal.<\/p>\n In Remedies for Love<\/em>, the poet who taught his readers how to fall in love teaches them how to escape it.<\/p>\n The same forces that create attachment, he suggests, can undo it. Habit can bind\u2014and habit can loosen. Attention can magnify desire\u2014and redirected attention can diminish it. Memory can preserve passion; distance can starve it. Even the self may be shaped by performance: pretend long enough, Ovid observes, and the role may become real.<\/p>\n Behind the wit, seduction, mythology, and scandal lies a remarkably original psychology of human attachment.<\/p>\n Ovid understands that we do not merely desire people. We desire through stories, rivalry, repetition, imagination, social display, and the fear of loss. He sees how desire is manufactured\u2014and how easily the person who believes himself its master becomes its captive.<\/p>\n At times elegant, comic, unsettling, and morally provocative, these poems resist easy judgment. Their assumptions about sex, power, and consent can disturb modern readers.
