What If Work Is the Detour?

What if civilization has spent thousands of years working toward one secret ambition: the abolition of work itself?

In In Praise of Laziness, Eugène Marsan begins with an apparent provocation and arrives at something far more unsettling. Laziness, he suggests, may not be the enemy of intelligence, virtue, or progress. Properly understood, it may be their hidden condition.

At a château on the banks of the Loir, a cultivated company of writers, artists, wanderers, and idlers turns an evening conversation into an audacious inquiry. Archimedes in his bath, Newton beneath the apple tree, Virgil, La Rochefoucauld, La Bruyère, Genesis, French guilds, industrial machines and the pleasures of doing nothing all enter the argument.

Marsan’s crucial distinction is between pigritia—sterile sloth—and otium: the fertile leisure of reading, contemplation, invention, conversation and reverie. From that distinction comes his most original reversal. Every tool, he argues, exists partly to spare effort. The wheel, writing, printing, animals and machines all belong to humanity’s long attempt to lighten the burden of necessity. Work labours toward its own disappearance.

Yet Marsan is too subtle to leave the paradox there.

The dreamy young Fair Laggard discovers that apparent inactivity can conceal an abundance of unrealized possibilities. Rivarol, dazzling and perpetually promising himself one more hour, discovers the opposite: leisure can nourish genius, but it can also allow genius to remain forever unrealized.

What begins as an elegant defence of idleness becomes a meditation on creativity, technology, ambition, freedom and the morality of time.

At once playful, erudite and unexpectedly modern, In Praise of Laziness asks a question that feels more urgent now than when Marsan first posed it:

If progress saves us time, what are we saving that time for?

And beneath that question lies another, quieter one:

What will you do with the hour before it disappears?
